Seconds count with Online Applications

Make it count!
We all know that filling out online applications can be time consuming and frustrating. You try uploading your resume and it doesn’t fill in properly or upload at all.
Don’t get stopped in your tracks by an incomplete application.
Don’t send an incomplete application
Cecilia Gorman, author of the blog “Confessions of a Creative Recruiter,” says that we “have approximately 4 seconds to impress a recruiter when using an automated application system.” Recruiters quickly glance at applications, looking for specific information that will let them know you are a qualified candidate.
In Cecilia’s article she tells us not to trust that our resume will upload correctly or auto fill correctly. If you simply upload your resume and hit “submit” you are most likely sending an incomplete application.
What happens to those “incomplete” applications? They are discarded. There is no information there that will make the recruiter consider you further. Every day hundreds of qualified candidates are discarded simply because their applications are not completed correctly.
You have 4 seconds. That’s all. Don’t waste your 4 seconds.
Verify that your resume uploaded correctly. You may have to reformat your resume to get it uploaded. If it is auto-filling, check that all the information came through correctly. Go back and fill in any blanks that are missing information before you submit. Yes, this takes time and even a lot of trial and error. If you are applying for a job that you really want, then it’s worth taking the time to get your application right.
This is your 4 seconds, make it count.
